Pregnancy and After Birth

Many new mothers have the baby blues: mild mood changes in the first two weeks after birth. Depression or anxiety during pregnancy or in the year after birth is different. It lasts longer and can make daily life, or caring for a baby, hard. According to the CDC, about 1 in 8 women report symptoms of depression after giving birth. It isn't anyone's fault, and it's treatable.

Reach out if low mood or worry lasts more than two weeks, gets worse, or makes it hard to care for yourself or your baby. Thoughts of harming yourself or your baby need help right away: call or text 988, or call 911.

For support any time, call or text the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-TLC-MAMA (1-833-852-6262). It's free and confidential, and counselors speak English and Spanish.

If You Need Help Now

If you are in crisis, call or text 988 any time, day or night. For Spanish, call 988 and press 2, or text AYUDA to 988. In an emergency, call 911.

Common Questions

Can I get support during pregnancy or after having a baby?

Yes. You can talk with us about pregnancy and the months after birth, as with any women's concern, and we'll help you find the right support. If you're struggling right now, the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline is available any time at 1-833-TLC-MAMA (1-833-852-6262), in English and Spanish.

What's the difference between the baby blues and postpartum depression?

The baby blues are mild mood changes in the first two weeks after birth, and they ease on their own. Postpartum depression is stronger and lasts longer, and it can make daily life or caring for a baby hard. It's treatable, and talking with a professional is a good first step.

What is PMDD?

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a more severe form of premenstrual syndrome. In the week or two before a period, it can bring intense irritability, anger, sadness, tension or panic, which ease a few days after the period starts. It's treatable.
